I went to Best Buy after work to see if they had my mp3 player in store. I also wanted to get my hands on it to play around with it somewhat. They have the black and green one in the store. It wasn’t on display, but teh 4GB one was. It was on display but it wasn’t turned on. So I asked a sales person who was nearby. He acted like he didn’t want to help me. Well … he DIDN’T really help me. I asked if it could be turned on so I could see the display. He said no. Then why the hell have it on display?
There were others that looked like they were on. I didn’t do anything with them because I didn’t want them. I learned more about the thing online then by going to the store.
At least I did see the size of it (tiny!). And I got to check out the controls. They weren’t stellar, but they were okay. I didn’t see anything that makes me not want that one, so I’m still planning on getting it. Hopefully I’ll get my tax refund before the end of the week. I just gotta see where I can get the best deal.

This is by no means a definitive buyer’s guide for mp3 players … it’s just how I decided which one I wanted.
1. Decide what it is that you want in an mp3 player … features, style, usability, etc.
- Make a list of things that you would like to have in an mp3 player.
For me, I would like it to have:
ability to create playlists, easy to use controls, easily sync or transfer files from my computer
- Make a list of things that you just can’t live without.
For me, I really have to have:
FM receiver, flash-based memory, ability to use rechargeable batteries OR have an internal rechargeable battery
2. Decide how much you want to spend.
- Pick an upper limit of what you’re willing to spend and stick to it the best you can. Sure, there are really pricey ones out there, but do you really need one of those? There might be a less expensive one that would be perfect
I initially set my limit at $100. But after looking around, I decided to up the limit to $125.
3. Where do you plan on using it?
I will mainly use mine at work. But I’m sure I’ll find other places to use it as well.
4. Do your research.
- Research the various players in your price range online. Do a Google search or check various sites to get a feel for what’s out there.
- Go to stores and actually handle the players … if they have ones you’re interested in.
