Friday afternoon I ventured into the world of gaming. I bought a Nintendo Wii. I’ve never been a gamer … unless you can count solitaire, but I decided to venture into the world of gaming anyway.

I’ve been debating about getting a Wii for a couple weeks now. My main reasoning is for the fitness “games”. I figured that it would be cheaper to get a Wii and those things than to join a gym where there would be set up fees, monthly/annual fees, and who knows what other sorts of fees. And I could workout in the comfort and privacy of my own living room. And hopefully the “games” will make it seem more fun than just a workout. I’m hoping it will be a stress reliever as well.

I haven’t bought any games yet. I plan on getting the EA Sports Active fitness “game” with my next paycheck. Eventually, I’ll get the Wii Fit as well, but I’m trying to spread out the expensive stuff.

As the title of this post suggests, I’m asking for your interaction.

What are some of your favorite Wii games?

I’m looking for suggestions on games to rent and perhaps buy. So please post a comment letting me know. I’d really appreciate it.

While I wait to hear back from the job opportunity I interviewed for last week and the job opportunity I applied for yesterday, I need a project to keep me occupied. I only really have one idea for what that project should be. I’ve already done something similar with this idea, but I thought I would take it a step further this time around.

What is the idea? Well, it’s a weather widget. Yes, there are lots of weather widgets already out there on the web, but there’s no rule anywhere saying I can’t add one more to the mix.

My previous stab at this idea was just for my own personal use on my own websites. It displayed the current conditions only for Fargo. This time I want to create something that others can download and add to their own websites. I also want it to allow for customization of the location of the conditions by the person who is viewing the website that the widget is on, and I want it to remember that customization.

I intend to use the NWS XML feeds for the data source. That’s what I was using for my first version of this widget. I trust the data from the NWS. I see them as an official source. I know that there are other sources out there that might have more data points, but I prefer the NWS, so that’s what I’m gonna use.

I’ve already created a brief outline of what I want to accomplish. I even started sketching out the database schema over the weekend. Now I just need to force myself to sit at the computer and work on it. I definitely could use the distraction while I’m waiting. Once I have things finished up, I’ll most likely add it to this site for download (with instructions of course). I don’t know if anyone else will want to use it, but it will be good for me to put this together. And it will be something nice to add to my portfolio.

When I was putting up my resume website and working on the redesign of this site, I was definitely in a better mood. On days where I’m not coding, it’s not good.

I need some help from you, faithful readers (I know there’s at least one of you out there … LOL). I need some inspiration. You see, over the past month, I’ve determined that I’m more happy during the day if I’m coding. When I was putting up my resume website and working on the redesign of this site, I was definitely in a better mood. On days where I’m not coding, it’s not good. I’m usually found on the couch staring at the tv. Not a pretty sight.

So, while I’m waiting to find my next job, I need something to occupy my time during the day … a new project. I’ve had a couple ideas, but nothing has lit a fire under my ass yet. One idea I had was for a weather script that I could turn into a WordPress plugin. I had a weather script for quite some time, but I took it offline when I cleaned up my other domain. Another idea I had was to put together a racing website. I’ve had a few in the past, each devoted to a single driver. This time around, I was going to make a generic racing site that had info on all drivers in the series. I also thought about adding a page where visiters could create an account and select up to 3 drivers to view info for each time they came to the site, if they were logged in.

What I need from you, faithful readers … or what I’m hoping you’ll provide … are some ideas for things for me to work on. Perhaps an idea for a WordPress plugin that hasn’t yet been done (or that could be improved upon), or some other functionality for any website. Or should I dive into either the weather script or racing website? Help me find a reason to get up in the mornings until I find my next job.

If you’ve been here before, you’ll notice the place looks a little different. I decided to do a little redecorating. Nothing major. I just wanted to make it look a little cleaner and fix up some things that have been bugging me for a while now. And since I have some time on my hands, it was the perfect time to do so.

One addition that you may notice is the ‘Share This’ link at the bottom of each post. I decided to add that. Not that I right anything work sharing very often. But I have my moments.

So, take a look around. Let me know what you think. And if you notice anything that looks wonky, please let me know. Things look ok in both FireFox (my preferred browser … and it should be yours too) and IE. But you never know when a silly IE quirk will pop up that I didn’t expect.

I also have a plugin that I’ve been thinking of working up for quite a while now. I’m not going to give any hints. I need a little mystery.

Every adult out there has been unemployed at some point or another in their life. Whether they just graduated from college and are looking for their first job in the “real” world or the troubled economy has caused their employer to make budget cuts, including eliminating their position. We’ve all been there.

Hopefully the time of your unemployment is minimal. But if not, you need to make sure you don’t lose your mind while you’re waiting to find your next dream job. You can’t be searching for a job 24/7. (If you can, let me in on your secrets … LOL). You basically know what sources are out there where you live. You can’t keep checking those sources all day long. Some (like newspapers and their websites) are only updated once a day. Even if you are looking for work in an industry that has a TON of openings, you’ll still have some time on your hands … whether it’s waiting to see if you get an interview or finding out if you get the job after an interview.

So what you do with that down time could make or break you … could keep you sane or drive you stark raving mad. Here are some things that I’ve been doing to try to keep myself from falling prey to the latter.

1. Keep doing what you’ve been doing, only for yourself. Of course, this one really depends on what type of work that you’re looking for. In my case, I’m a web programmer. I have my own websites that I can work on. I’ve had ideas bouncing around in my head for web applications that I just never got around to because I was too tired after a day of work or some other excuse. I have the time to pursue them now.

2. Learn new things, maybe even something that can help in your job hunt. I’ve recently become really interested in social media. (I blame Twitter.) While I have some time on my hands, I think I’m going to delve deeper into the industry. I may never use it in my professional life, but you never know.

3. Expand your horizons. Learn a new hobby. Find something to take your mind off being unemployed, even if it is only for a hour a day.

4. Spend time with friends. Lean on your friends. They’re there for you. That’s why they’re your friends. You’d be there for them. This is something that I need to learn to do more. I tend to withdraw in times like this.

5. Clean up your house/apartment. Since you might not have time to give your place a good cleaning when you’re working full time, now is the time to do some of the things that you’ve been putting off.

Those are just a few things that can keep you occupied and your mind off things while you’re waiting to find your next perfect job. And hopefully that wait is really short.
